Rangers’ Clement Explains Key Players Absence in St Mirren Clash

Rangers made several significant lineup changes ahead of their match against St Mirren at Ibrox, with captain James Tavernier, John Souttar, and Cyriel Dessers all left out of the starting XI. While Tavernier and Dessers eventually joined the action, Souttar was notably absent from the bench, sparking concerns about a potential injury for the 28-year-old center-back, who has been a key figure for both club and country this season.

After the game, manager Philippe Clement addressed Souttar’s absence, confirming the decision was made to avoid risking a serious injury. “He couldn’t [play] today,” Clement said. “The medical and performance staff were clear that if we put him on the pitch, it was a big risk for an injury. So that’s why I didn’t do it.”

When asked about Souttar’s availability for the upcoming game against Aberdeen, Clement added, “We’ll see in the next few days.”

John Souttar isn’t the only fresh injury worry impacting Rangers at the moment either.

The Rangers manager was asked about the situation with Tom Lawrence after the win over St Mirren and claimed it is unclear if the 30-year-old will be fit to face Aberdeen.

Asked if Lawrence would be fit for Pittodrie, Clement said: “I don’t know, to be honest.”
