Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been urged to prioritize signing a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window, following recent comments about how his team plays. Stevie Clifford, host of the Four Lads Had a Dream podcast, shared his thoughts on The Rangers Review (8 October), explaining that after discussions with Clement, it’s evident that the team desperately needs a solid number six.
Despite signing midfielders Mohamed Diomande and Conor Barron during the summer window, Clifford emphasized that Rangers are still lacking an out-and-out defensive midfielder, which is crucial for Clement’s tactical setup.
“I think you need a six,” Clifford said. “How we play under Clement – I spoke to him a lot about his structure and being wide open on the break. I spoke about that with Clement last week. Is that because he doesn’t have that dedicated number six that he wants and is a priority?”
Clement’s Rangers have shown attacking promise, but defensive vulnerabilities on the counter have been exposed. As the January transfer window approaches, a move for a dedicated defensive midfielder could be key to solidifying their play.
