Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has expressed confusion over recent comments made by Philippe Clement regarding Dujon Sterling’s fitness and lack of game time this season.
Sterling, who signed a new contract with Rangers, has struggled to secure a consistent spot in the starting XI, managing just two Premiership starts. In the Gers’ recent clash against Malmo, Clement chose to start Dutch defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo at left-back over Sterling, citing fitness concerns.
Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club (7 October), Hutton shared his surprise at Clement’s reasoning. “Recently, it was interesting that the manager actually came out and said he picked Kasanwirjo over him because he was fitter,” Hutton said.
He added, “What do you mean fitter? I was thinking has he got a knock or what? Or is he in training not up to speed? Last season, with his performances, you’re saying he has to play somewhere. When he’s come on, I don’t think he’s been the same as he was last season. There’s definitely something there that’s missing this season, and I don’t know what.”
Sterling’s dip in form remains a mystery, leaving Hutton and other fans puzzled by the player’s reduced impact compared to last season.
