Kenny McLean has long been a name linked with Rangers during transfer windows, with speculation often surrounding the Norwich City midfielder’s potential return to Scotland.
The 32-year-old has become a fixture in Steve Clarke’s Scotland starting XI, transforming his role after years on the bench. A move to Ibrox appeared imminent during the summer transfer window following McLean’s standout 2023/24 season, where he was crowned Norwich’s Player of the Year. Yet, he remained with the Canaries, where he is under contract until 2026, with an option for an additional year.
Despite the contractual hurdles, McLean’s well-documented allegiance to Rangers has kept speculation alive. A former Rangers academy player and lifelong fan, McLean has been open about his ambition to one day don the Light Blue jersey.
Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes that a move to Ibrox remains on the cards. Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said:
“Kenny’s come a long way since his early days at St Mirren and Aberdeen. Since moving to England, he’s developed leaps and bounds.”
When asked whether McLean will eventually play for Rangers, Ferguson was confident:
“It’s no secret that he’d love to play for Rangers one day. There was a lot of talk over the summer, and I’ve said before that midfield is an area where Rangers need experience. Kenny brings that in spades. His performances for Scotland in the last two games were outstanding.”
While McLean’s current deal with Norwich may complicate any short-term move, his passion for Rangers and Ferguson’s optimism suggest this story may not yet be over.
