Rangers manager Philippe Clement expressed his disappointment after Ianis Hagi’s long-awaited return to the first team was overshadowed by a red card during their match against St Johnstone. Hagi, who had been sidelined for 14 months due to injury, was dismissed following a VAR review for a “clumsy challenge” on Benjamin Kimpioka.
Hagi made a notable impact after being subbed on at halftime, setting up Vaclav Cerny’s second goal, and receiving a rousing ovation from the Rangers fans. However, his comeback was cut short in the 65th minute after a rash tackle resulted in a straight red card.
Reflecting on the decision, Clement admitted that while the challenge lacked intent or intensity, it was still deserving of the red card.
“It is what it is. It is also not a violent one or with high intensity, it was more a clumsy one, unlucky one,” Clement said after the match. “But it is a clear red card when I saw it afterwards, so I don’t think it will be a big suspension.”
Despite the setback, Clement remained hopeful about Hagi’s return to form, particularly as he joins the national team for international duty.
“Now he will go with the national team and I hope he gets minutes there, and then when he comes back, we can have good training,” he added.
Hagi’s red card, for serious foul play, means he will serve a two-match suspension, ruling him out of Rangers’ upcoming league fixtures against Kilmarnock and St Mirren. He is also ineligible for the Europa League campaign, having not been included in the squad for the competition.
Rangers captain James Tavernier echoed Clement’s sentiments, acknowledging the frustration of Hagi’s early exit.
“It’s disappointing to see Ianis getting sent off after coming back, but you saw the reception that he got today from the fans. That’s great to see,” Tavernier commented.
