Rangers fans are voicing their frustrations with Barry Ferguson’s decision to deploy Hamza Igamane in a left-wing role during the team’s recent defeat to Hibernian. The Moroccan forward, who had previously made headlines with a stunning 89th-minute winner against Celtic, has struggled to replicate that form, with his goal against Celtic remaining his only one in his last 15 appearances.
Against David Gray’s dynamic Hibs side, Igamane only managed one shot on target during his 88 minutes on the pitch, well below his usual average of nearly three attempts per game in the Scottish Premiership. Fans are pointing to his peripheral role in the match as a key reason for his lack of impact. Ferguson’s decision to position Igamane on the left wing, in order to accommodate Cyriel Dessers, has been met with widespread criticism.
Dessers, despite his struggles, managed to register four times the number of shots as Igamane but was unable to find the back of the net, with Hibs goalkeeper Jordan Smith keeping a clean sheet. Many fans feel that had the chances fallen to Igamane, the outcome could have been different.
On social media, supporters are expressing their displeasure with the tactical setup. One fan wrote, “Complete waste of time with Igamane out left. Put him through the middle. Roll on the takeover.” Another added, “That’s the biggest thing for me, no creativity in the middle of the park. Dessers will always miss. We continue to rely on moments from [Vaclav] Cerny and Igamane, who shouldn’t be out left.”
Further criticism echoed the sentiment that Igamane’s talents are being underutilized. “I repeat, Igamane needs to be moved into a striker role. The boy can offer so much more,” one supporter remarked. “Our star boy Igamane is wasted out on left. One up top at any match is a joke, but against Hibs at home is criminal.”
With Rangers fans calling for a tactical rethink and a more central role for Igamane, the spotlight is now on Ferguson to address the concerns raised by the supporters ahead of the team’s next fixture.
