Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland has ignited a debate among supporters after suggesting the team needed a different approach against Lyon in their recent 4-1 Europa League defeat.
Following the heavy loss at Ibrox, where Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette each scored twice, Butland admitted to TNT Sports that Rangers had given Lyon too many opportunities to showcase their individual quality.
“The disappointment for us is that we gave them too many easy opportunities for them to showcase that,” Butland said. “It’s one of those you wish you could do it over again because I think we’d have a…you hate to say it but I think there’s a different approach that we needed or there wasn’t enough quite from us in those moments to cut out the attack, make a foul, stop them getting in their stride.”
Butland’s comments have been interpreted by some fans as a veiled criticism of manager Philippe Clement, who has been under pressure following a series of disappointing results.
One Rangers supporter on X expressed their frustration, stating, “If that isn’t undermining the manager, then I don’t know what is.”
As the Scottish side continue their Europa League campaign, the pressure on Clement will only intensify, particularly if similar performances persist.
