Sky Sports Journalist Believes Rangers Did Everything to Retain John Lundstram

John Lundstram has announced his departure from Rangers, leaving the club on a free transfer this summer. The English midfielder shared the news with his followers via Instagram on June 5, expressing that he was leaving Ibrox “with a heavy heart” as his contract concluded.

Dan Bardell, a journalist for Sky Sports and talkSPORT, weighed in on the situation, believing that Rangers likely made every effort to retain Lundstram. Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell remarked, “I’d be surprised if Rangers didn’t try their hardest to get him to stay. I think he’s a player who’s popular with the fans.”

Reflecting on Lundstram’s tenure at the club, Bardell added, “When they signed him it was a bit of a surprise, I thought he was a really good signing for Rangers after he’d had a good season in the Premier League.”

The midfielder’s departure comes amid reported interest from Ipswich Town and Trabzonspor, as noted by The Scottish Sun and the Daily Record. Despite this, Lundstram appears ready for a new chapter in his career. “He obviously wants to try something different, maybe go back to England or abroad,” Bardell speculated. “But I do think that it is certainly a big blow to Rangers to lose him.”

Rangers manager Philippe Clement had previously confirmed early contract talks with Lundstram, underscoring the club’s intent to retain the player. Nonetheless, the allure of new opportunities has ultimately led Lundstram to seek pastures new.
