Ronald de Boer Expresses Concerns Over Sam Lammers’ Prospects at Rangers

Rangers legend Ronald de Boer has shared his apprehensions regarding the £3 million signing, Sam Lammers, who hopes to rediscover his form. Lammers had a remarkable 19-goal season at Heerenveen in 2018/19, sparking debates about whether he can replicate his success in Glasgow.

De Boer acknowledges Lammers’ past potential as one of the Netherlands’ brightest talents, evident by Atalanta’s substantial £8 million investment in him. However, concerns arise about Lammers’ recent goal drought and fitting into Michael Beale’s system. De Boer suggests that Rangers bring in a more traditional striker to complement Lammers, with Danilo from Feyenoord and Cyriel Dessers from Cremonese being the leading targets.

“Sam is a technical player,” De Boer tells the Daily Record. “But where is he going to play? Is he going to play as a number ten? Or will he play with two strikers?” De Boer questions Lammers’ role in the team and wonders if he can adapt effectively. The former Dutch international believes that to extract the best from Lammers’ elegant style of play, Beale should consider adding a classic number nine alongside him.

De Boer suggests two potential strike partners who could enhance Lammers’ performance at Rangers. He proposes Feyenoord’s Danilo and Cremonese’s Cyriel Dessers as ideal candidates. De Boer states, “If he wants to play with two strikers, then Danilo is the perfect guy to play with Sam. But, if Dessers is feeling fine, he is an amazing target man.” Both players have qualities that could complement Lammers’ style and provide the necessary support up front.

De Boer acknowledges Lammers’ significant talent and highlights his successful stint at PSV Eindhoven. However, he expresses doubt about Lammers’ ability to overcome his recent struggles. With only six goals in the last four years, there are concerns about whether Lammers can regain his confidence and deliver consistently for Rangers. De Boer concludes, “Sam has the potential, but I wouldn’t put money on it. With him, I still have a bit of doubt.”

Rangers have faced rejections for both Danilo and Dessers, two preferred striking options. The club’s bids were turned down by Feyenoord, leaving the Premiership runners-up to consider alternative approaches. The potential cost of acquiring either player may require a substantial financial commitment, casting uncertainty on Beale’s budget for reinforcements.
