Rangers are making a late push to bolster their attacking options before the transfer window shuts on Friday, August 30th. Manager Philippe Clement is eager to add depth to his frontline, which currently relies heavily on Jefte, Ross McCausland, Tom Lawrence, and Cyriel Dessers, as the club seeks to reclaim the Scottish Premiership title from Celtic.
According to a report from Viola News in Italy, Rangers have initiated contact to sign Croatian forward Josip Brekalo from Serie A side Fiorentina. Negotiations are reportedly in the early stages, with Fiorentina open to selling the 26-year-old as they look to trim their squad.
The Italian outlet did not disclose the exact fee Fiorentina is demanding for Brekalo, who was previously a target for Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa. With the winger entering the final 24 months of his contract, this summer represents an optimal time for Fiorentina to cash in. Waiting another year could see Brekalo’s market value drop significantly.
One potential hurdle in the deal is Brekalo’s salary, which is reported to be £34,000 per week—higher than Rangers captain James Tavernier’s £30,000 per week. This could necessitate negotiations over wages, or perhaps the structuring of an initial loan deal where Fiorentina would cover a portion of his salary.
Brekalo, who has been likened to former Rangers player Malik Tillman, made 34 appearances in all competitions for Fiorentina last season, contributing three goals and eight assists. The potential signing of Brekalo could provide Rangers with the added firepower they need as they aim to regain their domestic crown.
