Rabbi Matondo is reportedly on the verge of leaving Rangers to join Blackburn Rovers, according to the Daily Mail. The Welsh international appears “destined” to make the switch to the Championship side.
Matondo’s move comes after being linked with a transfer to Leeds United earlier in the summer. However, with Leeds now focusing on signing Largie Ramazani, discussions about the 23-year-old winger have seemingly come to an end.
It’s no surprise that Matondo is poised to depart Ibrox, given the consistent speculation surrounding his future during the current transfer window. Despite his potential, the winger has struggled to make a significant impact at Rangers, failing to secure a regular starting spot in the Scottish Premiership this season. He has only started one match, against St Johnstone, where he registered an assist for Cyriel Dessers’ goal.
Matondo’s overall output at Rangers has been underwhelming, with just six goals in over 60 appearances since joining the club from Schalke. This level of performance has been deemed insufficient for a team that needs to mount a serious challenge against Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.
Ironically, one of Matondo’s standout moments for Rangers came in the Old Firm derby, where his impressive strike helped secure a 3-3 draw. However, with the rise of young talent like Ross McCausland and the arrival of Václav Černý, Matondo’s opportunities under manager Philippe Clement appear limited.
As Matondo prepares for a new chapter at Blackburn Rovers, Rangers will look to build a squad capable of closing the gap on their rivals and reclaiming the top spot in Scottish football.
