Pundit Hints at Potential Behind-the-Scenes Issue with Todd Cantwell at Rangers

Former Rangers midfielder Derek Ferguson has questioned Todd Cantwell’s future at the club after the player was left out of the recent Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic and posted a celebratory photo on social media despite the team’s draw in the following match.

Cantwell, who joined Rangers in January 2023, impressed with goals in the final two games of the Scottish Premiership season, a 5-2 win over Dundee and a 3-3 draw with Hearts. However, his omission from the starting lineup for the crucial 2-1 loss to Celtic raised eyebrows, with pundit Peter Martin suggesting a potential rift between Cantwell and manager Philippe Clement.

Adding fuel to the fire, Cantwell’s post celebrating his goal against Hearts despite the team failing to secure a win drew criticism from some fans. Ferguson questioned Cantwell’s social media habits and hinted at potential off-field issues impacting his performance.

“I genuinely don’t know [if there’s a problem],” Ferguson said. “I’ve watched him in games and thought ‘wow, he’s a player by the way.’ And then sometimes I don’t know if there’s something going on behind the scenes, his private life maybe he’s on social media too much, there’s a lot made of that sometimes.”

Ferguson went on to express his frustration with Cantwell’s inconsistency, stating, “He’s hot and cold and you kind of wonder why because he was a player as a youngster that for whatever reason never kicked on, there must be a reason.”

With speculation mounting, it remains to be seen whether Cantwell will feature prominently in Rangers’ plans for the upcoming season.
