Former Rangers striker Kenny Miller emphasizes the need for the club to bolster its midfield with a creative playmaker during the January transfer window.
Since joining Rangers from Norwich City in January 2023, Cantwell’s journey with the Scottish club has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. Despite high expectations for the 25-year-old, particularly in terms of goal contributions, he has faced scrutiny for not replicating the form that garnered attention at the end of the previous season.
Dujon Sterling has earned praise for his performances in midfield, but it has become evident that he does not possess the creative spark that Rangers are desperately seeking. Miller believes that manager Philippe Clement should prioritize acquiring a playmaker in the current transfer window.
Sky Sports pundit Miller expressed his thoughts on the ongoing speculations surrounding Cantwell’s future and the crucial need for a creative force in the Rangers midfield.
“There are a lot of rumours about Todd Cantwell in that position [creative midfielder] right now. Is he happy in Glasgow? We don’t know for sure,” Miller wrote. “What we do know is that he has not produced the same kind of form he showed at the end of last term. Clement needs more from him.
“I take my hat off to Dujon Sterling who has performed admirably there. But he’s not the creative type or someone who might make the difference in a title race. That’s why I think the manager will look to strengthen that area of the pitch.”
Miller’s insights highlight the pressing concern within the Rangers camp regarding the midfield dynamics and the potential impact a creative midfielder could have on the team’s performance, especially in the title race. As the January transfer window unfolds, all eyes will be on Ibrox to see if Rangers heed Miller’s advice and secure the much-needed playmaking talent.
