Former Rangers striker Jermain Defoe, a Premier League hero with spells at West Ham, Tottenham, and Sunderland, believes the club can still win the title under new manager Philippe Clement. Defoe, who played a part in Rangers’ last title win in 2021, maintains close ties with some current players.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Defoe revealed his insights on Clement: “The players love him,” he said. “Apparently he’s a really nice guy, but he’s big on standards. And you have to be when you’re Rangers manager.”
Defoe highlighted the leadership within the squad: “The players that have been there, James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, these type of leaders that have been there for years, they will help the players.”
Praising the exciting style of play, Defoe added, “The way they play is really exciting, and it’s going to be an interesting finish. If they can do it, that would be amazing for the football club and the fans, because the fanbase is phenomenal.”
Despite a potential gap between Rangers and Celtic, Defoe maintains a positive outlook: “When you have played for that football club, and you understand the importance of the Old Firm and winning the league, you always have to be positive,” he said. “You always have to believe that you can go to Celtic and get a result. In those sort of games, form goes out the window. I am looking forward to it, I still think the boys can do it.”
