Former footballer Jamie O’Hara has strongly criticized Rangers’ recent summer transfer window, describing the team’s performance as “really average” following their 3-0 defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm derby. Speaking live on talkSPORT on September 2, O’Hara argued that the current squad pales in comparison to the teams built under former managers Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
Reflecting on the recent match, O’Hara said, “What I watched, it looked like men against boys. Celtic were just quicker, sharper, moved the ball better, and were tactically superior.” He went on to express disappointment with the club’s summer signings, stating, “I just think the recruitment hasn’t been good enough, has it?”
O’Hara also highlighted the contrast between the current squad and those of previous years. “When Gerrard was there, I took a bit more notice – because he was there – and Rangers looked like a good side. Van Bronckhorst comes in, they have a good European run, they were decent. Now I’m watching and I’m thinking these are really average.”
Rangers currently sit fourth in the Scottish Premiership, having secured seven points from a possible 12 under manager Philippe Clement. However, O’Hara’s remarks underscore the growing concerns about the club’s ability to compete at the highest level this season.
