Graeme Souness Reveals the Rangers Transfer That Is a Mystery to Him

Jack Butland has emerged as the ‘complete goalkeeper,’ according to Graeme Souness. The former Crystal Palace goalkeeper, who previously had a loan stint with Manchester United, has found himself at the heart of the action for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

Leaving the English Premier League behind, Butland made a notable move north of the border on a free transfer, securing a four-year deal under the management of former boss Michael Beale. In a short span of six months in Glasgow, Butland has not only endeared himself to the fans but has also showcased his prowess on both domestic and European fronts, making critical saves reminiscent of Rangers’ legendary goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Under the new management of Philippe Clement at Ibrox, Butland has continued to impress, and the Rangers faithful are hopeful that he will remain a key player for years to come.

Expressing his astonishment on talkSPORT with Jim White and Simon Jordan, Souness remarked, “How they’ve got Jack Butland, it’s a mystery to me. He looks like the complete goalkeeper. He’s got great presence, the modern keeper has to be able to deal with the ball at his feet, he’s got that, lovely kicker of the ball. He just looks like an all-round really, really good goalkeeper.”

Souness, a seasoned football observer, couldn’t help but wonder about the acquisition of the 30-year-old goalkeeper, entering what is considered the prime of a goalkeeper’s career. “I look at him thinking at 30 years old, which as a goalkeeper, you’re entering your best years, and I’m thinking ‘How have Rangers got him’ because he is a really, really top goalkeeper.”

The football veteran also drew attention to Butland’s departure from Manchester United, where despite being part of a goalkeeping trio with De Gea and Henderson, he left on a free transfer. Souness compared this move to Manchester United’s subsequent expenditure of £70 million on Onana.

Souness concluded, “What my eyes tell me is that this is a really good goalkeeper. That is what I have witnessed. The two or three games I have seen him, he looks like a really good goalkeeper. More than competent. I don’t think England are terribly blessed for goalkeepers right now.”
