Ferguson Tips Clement to Axe ‘Shaky’ Rangers Star V Benfica in Selection Twist

Philippe Clement is considering a defensive reshuffle, with Barry Ferguson suggesting that either Connor Goldson or John Souttar could make way for Leon Balogun.

The Light Blues are set to face Benfica in Portugal on Thursday, March 7, for the first leg of their round of 16 tie, seeking redemption after a disappointing Premiership defeat against Motherwell at Ibrox. Criticism has been directed at Goldson and Souttar for their “shaky” performance against Stuart Kettlewell’s side.

Ferguson, sharing his insights on The Go Radio Football Show on March 4, expressed his thoughts on the defensive situation, stating, “I was thinking that after the game on the way home that obviously they were a bit shaky defensively, no doubt about it.”

He further added, “Big Balogun has now had a few weeks since that bad bang on the face, and I think we’ll probably see him come back into the team on Thursday night over at Benfica.”

The potential inclusion of Balogun, who is returning from injury, could provide a much-needed boost to Rangers’ defensive solidity as they aim to secure a positive result in the Europa League encounter. Clement’s decision on whether to drop Goldson or Souttar will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike as the team looks to bounce back from recent setbacks and make a statement in European competition.
