Blackburn Rovers are keen to secure the services of Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell before the transfer window closes, according to a report by Alan Nixon. The English Championship side is reportedly preparing an offer for Cantwell, who is seen as a cost-effective option compared to other targets. The deal could materialize as either a loan or a permanent transfer.
Cantwell, who previously played for Norwich City, has been training with Rangers’ B Team and has yet to make an appearance this season. Rangers manager Philippe Clement revealed on 25 August via Sky Sports that Cantwell had twice requested to leave the club, further fueling speculation about his departure.
In addition to Cantwell, Blackburn has also shown interest in Welsh international Rabbi Matondo, as confirmed by manager John Eustace on 22 August through the Lancashire Telegraph. However, given the circumstances, Clement may prefer to offload Cantwell, who is currently out of favor and training away from the first team.
The 26-year-old midfielder, once a key player under former Rangers boss Michael Beale, has struggled to find his footing under Clement. His situation has led to frustration among fans, who are unhappy with Cantwell earning a substantial wage while not contributing to the team.
Although Trabzonspor had previously shown interest in Cantwell, they did not follow through with a bid, as reported by Sky Sports on 12 August. Blackburn’s potential offer could be crucial in securing Cantwell’s exit from Rangers before the transfer deadline.
