Derek Ferguson Makes Cyriel Dessers Admission After Rangers Win

Derek Ferguson has attributed Cyriel Dessers’ remarkable upswing in form at Rangers to an enhanced level of fitness fostered under the astute management of Philippe Clement. Dessers showcased his prowess by netting his eighth goal in Light Blue and his sixth in the Scottish Premiership during the Gers’ 2-0 victory over St Johnstone on Wednesday, continuing an impressive run of goal-scoring form.

Having faced criticism earlier in the season, where some dismissed the 19-year-old as a flop due to a sluggish start at Ibrox, Ferguson commended Dessers’ recent performances. He suggested that the discernible improvement in fitness levels under Clement’s guidance may be the catalyst for the player’s newfound sharpness on the field.

Speaking on Open Goal on December 21st at the 58-minute mark, Ferguson stated, “Maybe he’s becoming a wee bit fitter. You heard Clement talking about how he was disappointed in the fitness levels and what he expects, so maybe a five, 10 per cent fitter Dessers is going to show a bit more.”

The football pundit continued, “Obviously, he scored again last night. I saw a wee clip of the goal. Maybe that wee bit of sharpness, fitness, whatever you want to call it has made a bit of a difference. I’ve watched him since the start of the season and I thought he’s trying, he’s giving it his all, but is he good enough? He looks a happy chappy as well.”

Dessers’ initial performances at Ibrox had cast doubt on the wisdom of Rangers’ investment in the forward, creating an impression that he might not contribute significantly to their Scottish Premiership campaign. However, in the past few weeks, Dessers has managed to reverse this narrative.

His goal against Real Betis showcased exceptional composure, and his overall performance against St Johnstone exhibited a level of quality not previously witnessed under Michael Beale’s management. The improved fitness and a newfound sense of belief instilled by Clement may have brought out the best in the center-forward, signaling the beginning of a significant turnaround as the Premiership season progresses.
