Former Rangers player Derek Ferguson has raised questions about the future of Ianis Hagi, hinting at a potential departure from the club in the upcoming summer transfer window. Ferguson speculates that Hagi’s uncertain fit into manager Philippe Clement’s plans could be a decisive factor.
Ferguson, commenting on Hagi’s loan spell at Alaves, highlighted the player’s struggle for game time, with no starts since December and just two appearances in their last seven league matches. Chris Jack’s recent revelation that the chances of Hagi returning to Spain after the loan period are slim adds further doubt to the player’s future.
The former Rangers midfielder acknowledged the challenging decision ahead for the club, despite recognizing Hagi’s undeniable talent. “It’s a difficult one; I thought he would have gone there and kicked on, but it’s not quite worked out. I’m not sure he’s Philippe Clement’s type of player,” said Ferguson.
Reflecting on the initial purpose of Hagi’s loan move, Ferguson noted, “I think the reason he left was to go and get minutes under his belt, and it’s not happened. Sometimes players, it’s unfortunate at times, they stall and have these moments in their career.”
Expressing his hope for Hagi’s success, Ferguson added, “I just hope for the boy it works out because every time he did play for us, he gave his all. In terms of a fee, I’m not sure where you’d go for that. You can see the boy’s talented, he’s got a bit about him, he loves the game obviously, and sometimes it can be the pressure of his dad.”
Hagi’s father, a renowned football figure, seems to be a significant influence on the young player. Ferguson recalled, “I remember watching his dad; he was an incredible player, I think he’s a big influence on him. So I think they’ll be able to sort something out and get him somewhere where he can play and progress and get the best out of himself. I quite liked him but in terms of a fee, I haven’t a clue what you’d be looking for.”
As the summer transfer window approaches, Rangers faces a crucial decision regarding Hagi’s future, balancing talent, potential, and the challenges the player has encountered during his loan spell at Alaves.
