Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson believes that the club is just three experienced signings away from mounting a serious challenge against Celtic. As the season unfolds, it has become evident that Rangers manager Philippe Clement needs reinforcements, following a draw with Hearts, a defeat to Dynamo Kyiv, and unconvincing victories over Motherwell and St Johnstone.
Despite making several moves early in the transfer window, the majority of Rangers’ signings have been younger, inexperienced players or squad members like back-up goalkeeper Liam Kelly. So far, only Connor Barron and Vaclav Cerny have made a significant impact on the first team, and Ferguson insists more seasoned players are needed to turn the club’s fortunes around.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Ferguson said, “I’ve always said that you can only properly assess how a team is shaping up once the window shuts—but there’s no doubt there’s plenty of work still to be done on this Rangers team. I know the players are trying their damnedest to get the fans back onside after a gloomy summer. But it’s clear as day they need some major help.”
He emphasized the importance of experience, adding, “Clement and Koppen will be combing through their list of targets hoping they can get some new faces in late. If it were me making the big calls, I’d have three experienced campaigners right at the top of my wish list. I’d be looking for some streetwise characters who have been around the block and will be able to help guide the younger lads in the team through the difficult moments that are certain to come over the next nine months.”
There has been speculation that this season might be viewed as a transition period under the leadership of Belgian manager Clement, who is focused on reshaping the squad and allowing younger players to develop. However, Ferguson rejects the notion of writing off any season at Rangers. “You can never write a campaign off at Rangers,” he asserted, making it clear that immediate improvement is the priority.
