Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist voiced their opinions on the decision that stirred controversy at Ibrox. Brazil expressed his frustration, while McCoist found the humor in the situation, emphasizing the ongoing debate about VAR and referee decisions.
“Every week, you and I both moan about the referees going over to VAR and some of them not having the conviction to keep the same decisions,” McCoist remarked during a live talkSPORT broadcast on Wednesday (7 February, 6:11 am).
“Oh, I’ve given up,” responded Brazil.
Amidst laughter, McCoist continued to dissect the incident, saying, “Well, the referee did it last night, and he was wrong. Honestly, you couldn’t make it up.”
Describing the tackle that led to Sterling’s dismissal, McCoist added, “Dujon Sterling goes in for a tackle, he’s a bit late and he slips. He catches the player on the toe – it’s a yellow all day. The referee sends him off, and the VAR, to be fair to him, tells him that he’s a bit harsh.”
“The referee goes over, looks at the decision, and sends him off anyway. Even when they’re getting it wrong, and they have a chance to get it right, they’re still getting it wrong,” McCoist concluded, highlighting the frustrations surrounding inconsistent officiating in football.
